This is absolutely 100% a players-quality kit. The drums have a lot of wear and looks like someone toured extensively with it throughout the 70s.Ive included pictures of the most noticeable flaws above. The serial numbers and swivel feet Atlas stands date this set to approximately 1976. It had been sitting in a storage locker for decades before I obtained it. These drums are as clean and presentable as theyll get in original condition. Every lug was removed and polished, every tension rod and hoop was polished and removed of rust, and all of the prominent scratches in the wrap were gone over with a furniture marker. While some of these touch ups can still be seen under close inspection, the set looks way better than it did before. From just a feet away, none of these blemishes can really even be seen. And, if desired, a rewrap and a few new parts would instantly make this set look brand new. Below is a short description of each drum in further detail. Tom #1: Measures 6 x 5.5. This drum is arguably the best of the lot condition-wise. Both the chrome and wrap are in pristine shape. Tom #2: Measures 8 x 5.5. This drum is also in very good condition. The wrap and chrome still look like new.
Tom #3: Measures 10 x 6.5. The drum is in decent shape with some minor smudges in the wrap on the front side. There is about 3 of ply separation on the underside bearing edge. I havent noticed any progression of this separation in my years of playing this kit.
If desired, it could be glued and clamped shut. Tom #4: Measures 12 x 8.
The wrap has some slight separation at the seam, though this could also be glued back down with relative ease. A tiny 1/4 gouge is present on the underside bearing edge (common for concert toms). The wrap overall is in good shape.
Tom #5: Measures 13 x 9. This drum has three noticeable scratches in the wrap that also run through the badge.
The badge is bent away from the shell significantly on the bottom left corner. Tom #6: Measures 14 x 10. There is some pitting on one side of the hoop from where rust was previously removed. The wrap has lifted slightly at the the seam, though this can be glued back down. Tom #7: Measures 15 x 12.
There are multiple scratches in the shell that were later touched up with a furniture marker. There is also some notable pitting on the hoop from where rust was previously removed.
The badge and bearing edges are in good shape. Tom #8: Measures 16 x 14. The drum has scratches in the wrap which have been touched up with a furniture marker.
A majority of the Hoop is also pitted and scratched. The bearing edge and badge are both in good shape. Floor Tom: Measures 18 x 16. The hoops have some rust and significant scratching.
Two of the rubber feet are beginning to deteriorate and the badge is damaged in the bottom left corner. Much of the wrap has also been touched up with a furniture marker. Bass Drums: Measure 22 x 14. The wrap on both drums is in decent shape with only a few minor blemishes. Same goes for the lugs and claws.
The hoops have been retouched with a sharpie and look quite decent. Unfortunately, around half of the T-rods are damaged and will eventually need to be replaced (though they are all still currently functional). The toms and bass drum are all 3-ply Maple, Poplar, Maple with Granitone interior. Supraphonic Snare Drum: Measures 14 x 6.5. The chrome all around the drum is in excellent condition with no dings or scratches. Its worth noting that the butt plate has very slightly pushed into the shell from over tensioning, but neither side of the drum has gone out of round and I dont believe that this at all affects the sound of the drum.
Ive had these cymbals for quite some time and their brilliant finish has become significantly scratched over the years. Unless under the proper lighting conditions though, these scratches are not at all noticeable and the cymbals still look and sound great. Stands have the usual pitting and scratching expected with 50+ year old hardware. The bass drum mounted tom arms are significantly beat, though this wear is not noticeable once the arms are inside of the drums. No parts are missing on any of the stands and everything still works and holds great.
Ive found Evans Hydraulics to be the best sounding heads for concert toms. These heads have been on this set for about a year, so theyre a bit worn (though still have plenty of life left in them). The drums still had the Silver Dot Ludwig Rockers when I originally got them. The original resonant heads are still on the bass drums. Overall, this is about a 6/10 set. A majority of the wear is secluded to the wrap (and the cortex wrap was designed to take quite a heavy beating). That said, the drums themselves are still very solid and will easily last another 50+ years. They can be restored to look like new or you can play them as they are.
